About Tapi District (Gujarat)

Tapi district is a district of Gujarat state, situated at its southern part with its administrative headquarters located at Vyara town. Once Tapi was a part of the Surat district. On 27th September 2007, the earlier Surat district was divided into two new districts such as Surat district with its administrative headquarters located at Surat and Tapi district. Tapi district is famous for its dark dense forests where the production of bamboos is very high. On 2nd October, 2000 Tapi district was emerged as a separate district in the map of Gujarat state.

Suresh Joshi, a distinguished Indian-Gujarati novelist, short-story writer, critic, poet, translator, writer and academic was born on 30th May, 1921 at Valod in the district. His two most famous novels are Chhinapatra and Maranottar.

Geographically, the district lies at 21°20'N latitude, 73°70'E longitude and 730 m Altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 25.02% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 3,139 sq km. and in terms of geographical area it occupies the ranks of 20th in the state and 382nd in India. It is bounded by Narmada district on the north, Dang district on the south, Maharashtra state on the east and Surat district on the west. Most its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 1059.9 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 5 tehsils namely Valod, Vyara, Songadh, Uchchhal and Nizar. Moreover, the district comprises 4 towns and 488 villages. The administrative language in the district is Gujarati.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 8,07,022 including 4,02,188 are males and 4,04,834 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 1007 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 12.14% out of which 11.57% were males and 12.71% were females. The population density in the district is 257 (persons per sq. km.). In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 8,464 out of which 4,480 were males and 3,984 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 6,713 out of which 3,937 were males and 2,776 were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 89.95% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal languages in the district are Gujarati and Bhili/Bhilodi with 49.09% and 41.46%.

The economy of the district is dependent on agriculture. The chief agricultural products in the district are cereals, pulses, oil seeds, cotton, etc. The adoption of the new agricultural technologies amongst the famers of the district helps to increase the production of various agricultural items. There also some agro-based industries in the district like sugar manufacturing and paper-based industries. A few textile industries with advanced technology like spinning with captive power generation and energy efficient textile processing method are found in the district. Some prominent industries in the district are Central Pulp Mills, JK Papers Ltd, Vini Textiles, Deeprekha Impex Pvt Ltd, Shri Govardhan Sugar Industries, Valod Pradesh Sahkari Khand Udyog Mandli Ltd, Ukai Pradesh Sahkari Khand Udyog Mandli, etc. Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from these industries helps in its economy to a great extent.

The district is an abode of several reputed educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher education. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 68.26% including 75.44% are males and 61.16% are females.

Dr. Tushar Amarsinh Chaudhary, an eminent Indian politician and a member of 14th Lok Sabha from the Mandvi constituency was born on 18th December, 1965 at Dolvan tal in Vyara of the district. He is a leader of the Indian National Congress in Gujarat state.

The district has numerous centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. Places of religious tourism in the district are Rokadia Hanuman Mandir, Parsuramji and Suryatapeshwar Mandir, Kalyanraiji Mandir, Saibaba Mandir, Firangi Mataji-Jalaram Mandir, Mari Mata Mandir, etc. Devotees from far distance come to these temples in the district to offer their prayers. Some other places of interest in the district are Fort of Songadh, Gaumukh, Dosvada Dam, Hindustan Bridge, etc.
