About Churachandpur District (Manipur)

The name of the district is derived from the Churachandpur town, named after Sir Churachand Singh, K.C.S.I.,C.B.S. the Maharaja of Manipur. Earlier, Churachandpur district was popularly known as Manipur South District, came into existence in the year 1969. Due to an order of Manipur Government No. 20/39/69-D dated 12th November,1969, Manipur was divided into 5 districts and 25 sub-divisions. Under this same notification, the Churachandpur Sub-Division along with 15 hill villages of Jiribam sub-division were shifted and create the Manipur South district. From that period some minor territorial changes have been occurred in the jurisdiction of the district. Then in the year 1972, 14 hill villages of the Jiribam sub-division of Manipur Central District (present day’s Imphal district) were added to the administrative and revenue jurisdiction of Tipaimukh sub-division of the district. During 1981 and 1991 the district lost two of its hill villages of the Churachandpur sub-division. At the time of intervening period the name of the district had been changed from Manipur South District to Churachandpur district vide Revenue Department’s Order No.43/2/81-R(Pt) dated 15.07.1983.

Geographically, the district has a total 4,570 sq. km. area and occupies the rank 1st in State and 252nd in India on the bases of this size. It lies at 24°35' N latitude, 93°70' E longitude and 914 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 84.88% forest area of total geographical area. It is surrounded by the Cachar district of Assam, Tamenglong district, Bishnupur district, Senapati district, Kolasib district, Chandel district, Churachandpur district, Champhai district and Myanmar. The climate of the district remains extremely pleasant almost throughout the year. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 608.9 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 5 sub-districts namely Tipaimukh, Thanlon, Churachandpur North, Churachandpur and Singngat. Moreover, it has 3 towns and 600 villages. Meiteilon (Manipuri) is its official language. In the state of Manipur with an allotted district code of 274th district of Churachandpur came into existence on 15th July, 1983 with its administrative headquarters located at Churachandpur which is situated at a distance of 64 kms from the state capital.

Demographically, according to the 2011 census, the district has a total number of 49,916 households with a total of 2,74,143 comprising 1,38,820 are males and 1,35,323 are females which causing it to rank 4th in the state and 574th in India. The density of population of the district is 60 (persons per sq km). The sex ratio is pegged at 975 (females per 1000 males) while the child ratio stands at 948 (females per 1000 males). The population growth rate during the period 2001 to 2011 was 20.29% including 18.41% were males and 22.27% were females. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 1,062 out of which 637 were males and 425 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 616 out of which 484 were males and 132 were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Christian with 93.01% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal languages in the district are Thado, Paite and Hmar with 26.32%, 19.23% and 15.98%.

Economically, the district is dependent on agriculture primarily. In the year 2006-07 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 51,660 lakhs at current price and Rs. 43,282 lakhs at constant prices in the year 1999-2000. The net domestic product in the district during the period 2006-07 was Rs. 44,921 lakh at current price and Rs. 38,721 lakh at constant prices in the year 1999-2000. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost during the period 2006-07 was Rs. 17,152 at current price and Rs. 2,619 at constant prices in the year 1999-2000. The district is considered as one of the most backward region and receiving the Backward Region Grant Fund. Woollen, silk & artificial, ready-made garments & embroidery, wooden based furniture and thread based clothes small scale industries are available here.

Education wise, according to 2011 census, the literacy rate in the district is 82.78% out of which 86.97% are males and 78.5% are females. The total number of literates in the district is 1,95,935 including 1,04,013 are males and 91,922 are females. The total number of illiterates in the district is 78,208 including 34,807 are males and 43,401 are females. Bethany Christian College, Lamka College, Churachandpur College, Rayburn College, B. Kaljang Govt. Upper Primary School, Buallian Govt. Upper Primary School, Chinkham Modern High School, Cambridge Jr. High School, Dawn School, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Jawaharlal Nehru Model High School are some of the main educational institutes in the district.

Thangso Baite is a member of the Indian National Congress. He represented the Outer Manipur constituency in the 15th Lok Sabha. Kim Gangte is a politician from Communist Party of India, an educator and human rights activist. She has honor to become the first woman member of Parliament from Manipur. She is also serving as the general secretary of the Kuki Women Human Rights Network.

In the year of 2019-20, there were total 6,741 domestic tourists and 693 foreign tourists who visited here. The district has several famous tourist places to visit. These places are New Churachandpur, Tonglon Cave (South District), Cheklaphai (Singhat), Behiang, Kaihlam Hill Range, Near Tipaimukh, Tipaimukh.
